As you may be aware, effective September 1, 2018, Manitoba Health Insurance will no longer be available from the Province to international students enrolled at Brandon University. Brandon University is happy to announce it has secured enhanced coverage through guard.me International Insurance.
guard.me Plan: Cost $712.50 annually (non-refundable coverage from September 1, 2018 to August 31, 2019)
This insurance plan ensures you have coverage to be able to access health professionals when you need to (emergent and non-emergent care). Please see guard.meMORE @ Manitoba for highlights of the coverage.
If you suffer a sickness or injury, the most important thing is to get the medical attention you need. Without health insurance, the high cost of medical services outside your home country could limit your access to the care you need, or leave you with a large debt to pay. guard.me has reliable experts available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for friendly, award-winning help, advice and support.
More information on the guard.me Plan is available at: https://www.guard.me/brandonu. You can access the policy brochure and wording, submit claims, check status and view how-to information about insurance and FAQ’s.
If you are in a position to meet the eligibility requirements for Manitoba Health Insurance, you will be able to opt-out of the private insurance plan. Please review the information below for instructions on how to complete the opt-out process.
In order for Brandon University to ensure you are adequately insured, you will need to request confirmation letter from Manitoba Health. Please see the request and instructions for submitting. Don’t wait, if you are in this situation please get your request to Manitoba Health as soon as possible. The processing time is two weeks and the letter will be mailed, so you do not have a lot of time to wait.
The International Insurance Opt-Out Deadline is January 25, 2019. (this is the date Brandon University must receive your confirmation from Manitoba Health)
If you miss the opt-out deadline, you will be automatically enrolled in the private insurance plan and we will be unable to process late opt-out requests.
Please note, this plan is in addition to the Brandon University Student Union Supplemental Health & Dental Plan. This insurance is supplemental health & dental coverage that covers you for prescription drugs, dental care and other benefits that would otherwise be out of pocket (even when Provincial Health Insurance was in place). Please visit for more information on this plan: http://www.busu.ca/healthplan/
Both plans have an annual cost and are mandatory. All applicable fees will be assessed with your course registrations on your BU Student Account.
