Sustainability and Energy Management

At Brandon University healthy and sustainable building and outdoor spaces are an extremely important part of the high quality environment we provide.  We strive to reduce our ecological footprint by advocating  for action to protect the integrity of natural systems and are willing to share this information beyond our campus, wherever it is needed.

Brandon University LED Lighting Retrofit Project

Ceiling lights

In 2019 Brandon University working with MB Hydro embarked on a four year energy retrofit LED lighting project. The LED upgrade project scope includes all the interior, exterior, parking lot and pedestrian lighting on campus.

To kick off this program, a lighting audit of all campus lighting was performed to establish a return on investment (ROI) payback calculation. The results have proven that this energy enhancement will be paid off in an estimated 2yrs based on savings of utility energy watts consumed. We are also at the same time upgrading to new ballasts for each fixture to offer better compatible with LED bulb and extend the useful life of the fixture.

Benefits of LED Lighting

  • Very long lifespan expectancy of 10 to 15 years providing very low maintenance costs
  • LED lights consume up to 90% less power than incandescent bulbs leading to lower utility costs.
  • LED`s are extremely Energy Efficient and provide better lighting quality
  • High shock resistance
  • No danger of burning
  • No start-up delay
  • Dimmable

    Recycling bins Waste and Recycling

Brandon University is committed to becoming a zero waste community.  To help achieve this goal, we currently recycle paper, plastic, glass batteries, food waste etc.   We can help keep our campus clean and green by keeping garbage off the ground and litter out of landfills by properly disposing of waste in the numerous garbage and recycling containers that are located around campus.

    Waste Management

Brandon University encourages waste reduction while striving to divert land fill waste to meet and/or exceed current legislative requirements. Creating an educational platform to share goals and work collectively with internal and external clients to meet overall success and continual improvement.

    Our Routine Services Include:

    • Cardboard and paper bins
    • Mixed recycling

    Centralized Waste Program

Starting in August and through the fall 2023, we will be fully centralizing our waste collection process for private office spaces on campus. This is common at campuses across Canada but is a change to how BU has been handling some of our waste. Previously, I shared that Physical Plant and Finance & Registration had begun trialling the new approach, and we’re very pleased with how successful it has been. Now, we are rolling it out to the rest of Clark Hall, to the Library and IT Services, and to Health Studies. The rest of campus will follow shortly after with a phased approach.

We have created a video that walks you through the change and what it might mean for you: Let’s Go Green! Centralized Waste on Vimeo
