Matthew Steckler attended Wesleyan University where he studied music, Russian, history, and literature. He then went on to attain an M.M. in Jazz Saxophone from New England Conservatory, and a Ph. D. in Composition from NYU. He was mentored in jazz performance/composition by several luminaries including: Nick Brignola, Thomas Chapin, Jay Hoggard, Anthony Braxton, Jerry Bergonzi, Michael Cain, Danilo Perez, George Russell, Cecil McBee, Paul Bley and Jim McNeely. Matthew writes regularly for the groups Dead Cat Bounce and Persiflage, has led additional projects including SWIPE Cartel, Lavender Jones & The Dead Giveaways, The Famous, The South End Ramblers, and has produced numerous works for orchestra, chamber groups, film & theater. In addition, he has worked as a freelance performer with several U.S-based jazz, world and popular music ensembles, and appeared at such landmarks as The Blue Note and Lincoln Center (NYC), The Kennedy Center (DC), Regattabar (Boston), Operetta Teatrul (Bucharest), House of Blues & Jazz (Shanghai), and the Tri-C, Key Maine, New Haven, Discover and Flint Jazz Festivals. His teaching experience of over 17 years includes faculty positions at RPI, NYU and Bergen Community College, Metro NYC and Boston Public and Parochial Schools, collegiate visiting artist and musical director posts nationwide, and private lessons. Among Matthew’s achievements are commissions from Meet the Composer, American Composers Forum, American Music Center and Chamber Music America, a 3-time poll winner in the Boston Phoenix, and a Boston Music Award. Reviews are available in Downbeat (4 stars; Top CDs 2012), Jazz Times (Top 50 CDs 2011), Cadence, Signal to Noise, NYC Jazz Record, Boston Globe, Boston Phoenix, and other publications.
