Aren Teerhuis grew up in Oakbank, Manitoba and attended Brandon University where he studied jazz saxophone with Greg GatienAfter earning his Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance, Aren returned to Brandon University to do a Master’s Degree, working and studying with saxophonist Wayne De Silva and pianist Michael Cain. He graduated again in 2017 with a Master of Music in Performance and Literature (Jazz and Composition).

 

Aren continues to live in Brandon and work in many roles, both musically and as an arts administrator. He performs frequently in the Westman area as well as Winnipeg, leading the Aren Teerhuis Group and playing in other local ensembles. In 2016, Aren joined Michael Cain’s SOLA, and in 2017 did two US tours and recorded an album with the group. He can be heard on Michael Cain’s 2018 album Hoo Doo.

 

Aren is an active and in-demand woodwind and jazz clinician, and maintains a private studio of saxophone students. Aren is currently a sessional instructor and the Outreach Coordinator at Brandon University’s School of Music.
