Hwan Gyu Cho is an active Korean-Canadian clarinetist, clinician, and teacher. Originally from South Korea, he moved to Canada by himself in 2012. Music has been a part of his life since he was ten years old, when he was first introduced to the clarinet. He attended a private music institute to learn piano and continued to develop his interest in music through playing the clarinet in his church wind ensemble where he served as the ensemble leader until he graduated from high school. After moving to Canada, he joined the Thompson Community Band and performed various venues. His passion for music grew and he entered Brandon University in 2016 to study music, he received Bachelor of Music degree in 2020 and Master of Music degree in 2022, majoring in Clarinet Performance & Literature under the guidance of Dr. Catherine Wood.

While studying music at Brandon University, Hwan Gyu performed in various music ensembles, including the university orchestra, symphonic band, new music ensemble, clarinet choir, and chamber music groups as well as performing solos. He has participated in various festivals and masterclasses and won awards at diverse competitions. Hwan Gyu often performs with the Regina Symphony Orchestra as a guest member since 2022 and was also selected as the 2022-2023 Virtuosi Concerts Young Artist, where he performed chamber music and solo pieces in the Virtuosi Concert series.

Hwan Gyu is as passionate about teaching as he is about performing. He currently teaches Aural & Keyboard Skills as a sessional instructor at Brandon University School of Music and teaches clarinet at Brandon University Eckhardt-Gramatté Conservatory of Music since 2018. He has also served as a clarinet faculty at the 2023 International Music Camp and has taught a variety of level students at diverse venues as a clarinet clinician. He is a member of the International Clarinet Association and the Canadian Federation of Musicians.
