What education have you taken?

I am currently fulfilling the Senior Practicum for my Bachelor of Science in Psychiatric Nursing. Previously, I completed a two-year Medical Laboratory Technology Diploma and various certificate programs for professional and personal development, including those related to emergency medicine, manufacturing practices, health and safety, and fitness.

What accomplishments are you proud of?

Having the courage and perseverance to return to full-time studies at 47 years of age. Daily, putting myself in uncomfortable situations, by asking questions providing feedback, and advocating for others.

Raising two socially progressive and emotionally intelligent children, nurturing a marriage of 28 years and creating a safe and supportive family environment despite significant challenges, would top my list of accomplishments.

Give a brief bio about yourself/ your background/ your history.

I was and raised in Calgary, Alberta. I moved to Winnipeg when I was 21 years old and worked for Canadian Blood Services in both the lab and marketing departments. During the same time, I filled two short term positions with Red River College, teaching Transfusion Science and Phlebotomy. For the past 25 years I have managed Quality Assurance and Training for a local manufacturing business while raising two children and being involved in many local school and community volunteer positions. My personal interests have included reading, cooking, fitness trainer certifications, and other outdoor pursuits.

How did you become interested in your field of study?

As a teen I often shadowed staff in the histopathology department of the Foothills Hospital. A school research project about schizophrenia began a lifelong interest in the workings of our minds and bodies. Starting in my early adulthood, I acted as health advocate for family and friends who were navigating both medical and psychological illness. Cancer, alcoholism, bipolar disorder, and end of life care were just a few of the conditions that fed my interest in psychiatric nursing.

What is your philosophy in life?

I believe every person should be able to live a full and meaningful life by their own standards. Every person is made up of unique and valuable experiences, talents, and worth. Every person can experience recovery, hope and meaning.

It is my goal to respect, support, and advocate for others as they face inequities, challenges and ill health.

Where do you see yourself in the future?

There are so many areas related to psychiatric nursing that excite me; teaching, developing health care policy and procedures, creating and facilitating family support groups, and the post graduate program, to name a few. My first step is to obtain a position in acute psych to provide the work experience needed for my other goals.

In one sentence, how will you #AccelerateAction?

I will Accelerate Action by using my courage and my voice to celebrate, support and advocate for, the advancement of women and girls.
