Kirston Blom

What education have you taken?
I am pursuing my Master of Psychiatric Nursing at Brandon University, building on my background in nursing to specialize in Indigenous mental health. My academic journey has been shaped by my commitment to supporting Indigenous communities, particularly in Saskatchewan, where I focus on culturally responsive mental health care.
What accomplishments are you proud of?
I am incredibly proud of my work as a community mental health nurse and my involvement in the mental health court, where I advocate for my clients with complex mental health needs. I am a committee member for the CRPNAS under their education/program approval, a member of the PPG Indigenous Nursing with CRNAS, a committee member with the USask Indigenous Advisory Committee, and a part of the Indigenous Advisory Committee with SUN under CFNU.
Give a brief bio about yourself/ your background/ your history.
My Red River Métis and Cree heritage deeply influences my approach, driving me to challenge systemic barriers and promote holistic, trauma-informed care. I have been working as a Registered Psychiatric Nurse for ten years now, and a proud mother to Lincoln, Ophelia, Adaline, and my newest addition, August.
How did you become interested in your field of study?
My interest in psychiatric nursing stems from witnessing the gaps in mental health services for Indigenous populations. I am passionate about integrating Indigenous knowledge with Western practices to create meaningful change in healthcare and justice systems.
What is your philosophy in life?
My philosophy is centred on resilience, cultural identity, advocacy, and awareness. I believe in fostering safe spaces where individuals feel empowered in their healing journeys no matter where they are in their healing journey.
Where do you see yourself in the future?
In the future, I see myself continuing to advocate for systemic change, influencing policy, and through my professional practices and will continue to advance my academic pursuits.
In one sentence, how will you #AccelerateAction?
I will #AccelerateAction by advancing culturally safe, trauma-informed, and strength-based mental wellness care for my First Nation and Métis women and advocate for more representation of Indigenous psychiatric nurses.
