What education have you taken?
I am currently a 3rd year Nursing Student. I completed my full grade 1 to grade 13 at St Mary’s Catholic High School, Dubai, United Arab Emirates. I graduated in 2022.
What accomplishments are you proud of?
I am the co-chair for the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee for the Faculty of Health Studies. I am proud of the ongoing work with this committee to make the Faculty of Health Studies a safe place for marginalized students. Additionally, I have been on the Dean’s Honor List since 2023 and a recipient of the Brandon University International Undergraduate Scholarship.
Give a brief bio about yourself/ your background/ your history.
I was born and raised in Dubai, United Arab Emirates to Nigerian parents. I am so grateful to have been raised in such a multicultural society. Additionally, I’m the eldest of three, and I’m Christian.
I have been in Canada since Fall 2022. I currently am a student assistant at the John E. Robbins Library.
My interests are varied but, primarily, music and books define my day-to-day life, and one of my key role models is Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, who is also my favourite author of all time.
How did you become interested in your field of study?
I knew I was going to be a part of the healthcare field since I was in grade 6. It was and still is rooted in the mere, simple fascination with the human body — the complexities in our strengths and our ailments. I was drawn to nursing, in particular, because of the versatility in care in various specialties and the emphasis on holistic care of the person.
What is your philosophy in life?
Two philosophies inform my approach to life: firstly, resilience and faith will get me to any finish line, and secondly, do good to others without expecting the act to be reciprocated. To expand on, resilience and faith don’t negate the hardships and emotional challenges of the race but it is a reminder that it is possible and I can fight on and do it. Finally, I believe one’s goodness/act of goodwill shouldn’t be solely dependent on others’ reciprocity as it can be a setup for disappointment, and we need more selflessness in our modern society.
Where do you see yourself in the future?
I see myself in a leadership and mentorship position within healthcare, being a beacon of hope and possibility to women and girls who look like me. I also see myself involved in medical mission trips and/or organization
In one sentence, how will you #AccelerateAction?
I will #AccelerateAction by pushing for inclusivity and intersectionality in academia and healthcare. Marginalized women need to be empowered to realize they do belong in these spaces.
