Credit Recital Policies

Credit Recitals at Brandon University School of Music are curricular components which are designed to develop students’ professional performance skills. In addition, credit recitals are designed to develop those skills of preparation, organization and promotion associated with professional performance.

Brandon University students who have registered, or wish to register, for a Credit Recital should be aware of the following requirements and procedures: 

  1. Registration is limited to students who have been admitted to the Performance Degree Program or, if registered in a different School of Music degree program, those who have been given permission on the recommendation of their Applied Jury in the semester-end jury prior to their intended registration. 
  2. In consultation with the student’s teacher and with the School of Music Office, a recital date and venue should be scheduled. Scheduling may be facilitated by utilizing the on-line services of the School of Music and the links to the Lorne Watson Recital Hall booking page. Students are encouraged to make arrangements as far in advance as possible. If the selected venue is not the Lorne Watson Recital Hall, please check with the School of Music Office for any conflicts.
  3. A Credit Recital Form must be submitted to the School of Music Office at least five weeks before the intended recital date. Recitals may not be scheduled later than the end of the examination period in any term. The form must be signed by the student and teacher, and must include the intended repertoire and timings.
  4. Jurors will be assigned by the Chair of the Applied Department or designate. Students may not select or solicit jurors for recitals.
  5. Students will normally be provided confirmation of their proposed recital date within three weeks of the proposed recital date. Some recital dates and times may be restricted due to the availability of faculty jurors.
  6. The complete recital program, including repertoire, names of collaborating artists, and other program information should be should be submitted within two weeks of the recital.
  7.  Arrangements for a concert assistant and for recording must be made in advance, in accordance with Lorne Watson Recital Hall booking policy. The booking policy is available on-line: School of Music/Policies/Lorne Watson Recital Hall.

Procedures for scheduling Credit Recitals

  1. Registration for credit recitals should occur prior to the term of the intended performance. Under no circumstances will registration for credit recitals be permitted after "last date for registration:" as stated in the General Calendar. In addition, all dates and procedures listed in the Calendar with regard to withdrawal, uncompleted work, non-payment of fees, etc., apply to credit recitals.
  2. All registrations for credit recitals require the signature of the Chair of the Performance Department on the registration form.
  3. As soon as possible, and no later than five weeks prior to the proposed recital date, the student, with approval of his or her teacher, secures a date and time through the Office. At the same time, the student submits the Credit Recital Form, signed by the student's teacher, to the Chair of the Performance Department.
  4. The student should complete the Internal Booking form for the Lorne Watson Recital Hall, after checking the availability of the hall on the website calendar. The form must be emailed to music@brandonu.ca at least 2 weeks prior to the recital
  5. The Performance Department Chair assigns a three person jury - the applied teacher and two other faculty jurors - and secures written approval from all jurors of the selected repertoire.The Performance Department Chair provides the student written notification of approval of repertoire and date/time.

Procedures for arranging Graduate Credit Recitals including Concertos or Major Chamber Works

  1. As soon as repertoire is selected and no later than Eight Weeks before the intended recital date, the student completes the recital form on the School of Music Website. (select programs, graduate and click on the Recital Form) The student completes the graduate department recital form and submits the form and prints a hard copy for the Graduate Chair. The form must be submitted to the Chair for his signature.
  2. The student must check the availability on the website calendar, of the Lorne Watson Recital Hall and complete the Internal Booking form to book a time for the hall. The form must be emailed to music@brandonu.ca at least 2 weeks prior to the recital
  3. The Chair brings the proposal to the Graduate Music Department for its approval.
  4. The proposal, if approved goes on to the Performance Department Chair who will assign the jurors.
  5. The student then contacts the jurors re their availability before returning the completed form, along with a short biographical sketch for publicity purposes, to the Performance Department Chair No less than four weeks before the tentative recital date.Program notes should be submitted at least four weeks before the tentative recital date.
  6. Program notes are required for 65:613 Public Recital I. These notes, normally about 1000 words, must be suitable for distribution to the audience, and will be included with the recital program at the public performance. Although biographical information is suitable for inclusion when relevant, the principal topic of these notes is to be the music (context, analysis, performance practice, etc). Citations are not expected to be frequently required, but must appear within the main body of the text rather than in footnotes when necessary. Three print copies of these program notes must be submitted to the Chair of the Graduate Music Department no fewer than four weeks prior to the scheduled recital, and each copy must be accompanied by a complete bibliography of works used in the preparation of the program notes. The program notes will be read by two readers and will be judged satisfactory or unsatisfactory, If they are found by both readers to be satisfactory, the notes should be prepared for distribution. If they are found unsatisfactory by either reader, specific feedback, ill be provided to the student, who will revise the notes and resubmit for another reading. It the two readers cannot agree after this revision, the student may ask for the Chair of the Graduate Music Department to be involved, and the Chair may either 1) ask that the notes be revised (with specific feedback) or 2) declare the program notes to be satisfactory. Program notes must be found satisfactory before the recital may take place, even if the originally scheduled date must be changed.
  7. The office staff will format and photocopy the recital programme.

Arranging non-credit noon hour recitals

  1. The student must check the availability on the website calendar, of the Lorne Watson Recital Hall and complete the Internal Booking form to book a time for the hall. The form must be emailed to music@brandonu.ca at least 2 weeks prior to the recital

Students requesting recording services

  1. The student must check the availability on the website calendar, of the Lorne Watson Recital Hall and complete the Internal Booking form to book a time for the hall. Please outline on the form your request for recording, lighting, piano requests and back stage assistants. The form must be emailed to music@brandonu.ca at least 2 weeks prior to the recital
