Haley Hrymak

What education have you taken?

I completed my elementary and high school education in Erickson Manitoba. I am currently in my third and final year at Brandon University majoring in Psychology with a minor in Native Studies.

What accomplishments are you proud of?

I am proud of our WUSC local committee winning the Local Committee of the Year award this past November.

I was also really excited to hear I had been selected to take part in this year’s International Seminar in Nepal.

Tell me about yourself.

Growing up on a farm I have always loved animals. I have been involved in equestrian my whole life and horses are a big part of my family.

Music has always been a huge part of my life as well. I played a variety of instruments in the community and at school. I was very fortunate to have wonderful music teachers who really inspired me.

I was also really involved in sports in high school. My towering 5’0″ frame led me to great heights, such as captain position on both the basketball and volleyball teams.

I recently became an in-school mentor with the Big Brothers and Big Sisters program of Brandon and I love it.

How did you become interested in your field of study?

I’ve always wanted to have a profession where I can help others so a major in psychology seemed to be a good fit. As for Native Studies, I knew it was for me about twenty minutes into my first class with Darrell Racine.

What is your philosophy in life?

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” Eleanor Roosevelt

Where do you see yourself in the future?

My ability to see into the future needs some work.

Nominator’s commendation:

“Haley is currently completing her third and final year in the Bachelor of Arts Program with a major in Psychology and minor in Native Studies. Haley has previously been involved with the Women’s Collective on campus and is currently involved with the Psychology Club. Outside of her studies, Haley dedicates her time tothe Brandon University WUSC (World University Service of Canada) Club on campus. She has been influential in the organization and successful carry through of WUSC events such as the Stand Up and Speak Out Rally Against Poverty, Mock Refugee Camp and Student Refugee Program Information Day, and the current efforts of the club to get the student WUSC levy raised in the hopes of Brandon University being able to increase the potential to sponsor two refugee students in coming years as opposed one. Haley was one of only twenty Canadian students chosen to attend WUSC’s International Seminar in Nepal this summer. While there she will work with nineteen other Canadian students and twenty Nepalese students on a research project on sustainable forests and livelihoods in Nepal. Haley is a truly wonderful person whose warm demeanor spreads to those she meets instantaneously.”
