Donata Huebert

Donata Huebert

What education have you taken?

I got a Bachelor of Physical Education degree with minors in French and Psychology and am currently enrolled in the Education program at BU (graduation in May 2016)

What accomplishments are you proud of?

I am proud to be a member of the Bobcat family. Sports has given me so much over the course of my life and the volleyball program and BU itself through scholarships and other recognitions have made it possible for me to live and to receive a great education here in Canada.

I am also very proud of being able to give back a little bit to the community and the program. Teaching young kids and adolescents how to play volleyball and embrace sports in their own lives, teaching French as a second language over the past few years, and working for the YMCA Before and After School program this year have all been extremely rewarding experiences for me that I am proud of and thankful for.

Tell me about yourself.

I come from a city in the North of Germany. I have three siblings and we all grew up in our family home with my mom. I went through a sports-oriented high school and went to the Sports University Cologne for 3 semesters. I played volleyball professionally in Germany for 3 years. In 2010 I decided that I wanted to go to North America to pursue my education. After playing my first season in Brandon, I left for two seasons to go play professionally again in France. This was an amazing opportunity for me. I returned to BU in 2013 in order to finish my studies and still play volleyball on a great level.

How did you become interested in your field of study?

I became interested in education after working with children and youth over the last few years in athletic summer camps. I love working with kids and young adults, seeing them develop, and helping them along their ways. It is a very rewarding profession for me.

What is your philosophy in life?

I don’t think I can really pinpoint down a philosophy in life for myself. I value honesty, kindness, passion, and thankfulness in myself and others. I thrive on challenges and changes. And I believe in the choice of freedom in a physical way but even more so mentally.

Where do you see yourself in the future?

In the near future, I see myself traveling as much as possible, and that might actually never stop. Further down the road, I wish for a happy, challenging, and fulfilled life, whatever that might look like.

She is an international student from Minden Germany. She competes on the BU women’s volleyball team as a libero. As a memeber of this team Donata has been recognized in Canada as the best player in her position three times.

Even though participating at an elite level is a tremendous commitment Donata also finds time to tutor for some young elementary students in Brandon. She assistant coaches a youth club volleyball team, plus works at the YMCA Before School program at Waverly school. She is doing all this and maintaining honours level marks in her second language.

Donata wanted to experience a different culture for her last placement of student teaching. She helped facilitate her placement in a Singapore International School in Jakarta Indonesia. She will be the school’s first ever student teacher.
